I go down there and jam with the band. It wasnt his most intense stuff, but fortunately I knew who he was and that it was going to be good stuff. Hes sort of a quiet guy. We had this other guy jump in. I hadnt done that. How was the 2007 Genesis tour? Genesis, as soon as they could afford it, started chartering planes for tours. All three members of the trio Genesis played a part in the decision to simplifiy their sound, with Banks being the most in charge. We were out there hitting it together and theres something about that. They had some really nice material they were promoting at the time [from their album One]. Daryl and I came back. Let me remember: Leee Kerslake. Yeah. Phil Collins was always skittish about leaving the drum stool. Too bad Vinnie couldn't make it. That stood out more than anything. We didnt do a lot of shows, but at the very last show [at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 1st, 2010], he wasnt the happiest hed ever been. And initially, that was so families could travel. I checked with the manager. But the next thing I know, they started having meetings. So I can understand he creates mixed emotions , the disappointment we all felt with the direction of music through the 80s but I think he has been turned intoa scapegoat for a much broader trend. I watched it a couple of times, but Bob hung out with us the whole time. For me, I thought it was fifth or sixth grade. I know people were caravanning from here to see it, but it was still a little too raw at that point. Terry Bozio: good drummer but he didn`t compose anything for the band U.K. Was successful in the Missing Persons Pop band. It got awkward. And I dont want to ever only play one thing. The first album after Gabriel left was still very progressive sounding, and as the albums after came out, the change could be heard more and more. The vocalist is the frontman, he/she has to move around face the audience, etc and a drummer is normally attached to his kit. Drummers and keyboard players don`t have the same status as them". Its interesting to see peoples perception of what they think it is as opposed to the way it really was. I probably heard more Elvis than anything in the Fifties. But he still had that American stuff; it was a big part of his background, and we just hit it off immediately. And even though Im not doing it anymore, Im glad that he decided to go back to work. Ive already played stuff for the guys. Roger Taylor: good singer, good composer, good drummer, but he has never had the same success as Collins with his solo albums. They sent over some cassettes. At one point on that show, I was supposed to play a backbeat to go into the last tune. It was amazing. It was pretty valuable stuff. Was that fun? The problem is that after a couple of albums Tony lost xcontrol and Phil decided what path to take, making a parallel solo career that is comonly mistaken with Genesis later albums, that's what I blame him for.Actually I havent heard Hacketts Genesis revisited - is it good? Did they audition you? Playing in bars must have really sharpened your skills. They had presented him with this amazing gift. Ive crossed paths with Joe many times since and he even apologized at one point for the way it all went down, but I didnt have a problem with it. It was a vocal version. But back to the point, the investment in this album was big, Bruford, Levin, Wetton, Ian Mc'Donnald, Julian Colbeck, etc are not cheap, and he knew from thestartthis album would never be a hit. Id always wanted to teach myself. I don't think he's bnasty, seems a nice chap, but he said too many stupid things and then contradicted himself depending in the way the market went, He said Prog is crap when Prog was unpopular and harrased by Punk, Discoor New Wave, but when his boring pop became part of the past he changed and said he always was a proghead. Soon after that, I wound up touring with [jazz organist] Jack McDuff. We did European tour in a van. Some info from Hugh Fielders book:In 1965 Ant Phillips formed the band Anon with Richard Macphail, Rivers Job, Rob Tyrrell & Mike Rutherford. I didnt know, but he did step back for quite a while. Id always be checking out the rhythm section because some of them brought their own rhythm section. And to be honest, my whole career has been about playing different kinds of music. I don't think he was ever going to be on board with expanding it to additional legs. Probably not. But I was fortunate. We laughed a lot. Then it got weird because they got comfortable with two drummers playing. Gabriel, Hackett, Rutherford and banks Are great composers. Frank had a blackboard onstage with all the note names on it. Several times we were on Phils tour in 2005 and they had meetings about how to put this tour together. Had they brought me, they would have had to pay another musician just to sit there. I mean, how many damn sings can one guywrite for Disney? Who knows what thats going to look like at this point. Did they talk to you about being a part of that? [Laughs] There was no way I could learn it by the next day. After 20 years, it was enough. Early life [ edit] You have four guys with British accents [Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Steve Hackett], and there was tour management and a couple of other guys, all with British accents. One day, he got pretty frustrated with me and literally cussed me out in front of everybody. We normally had a lot of eye contact at shows. Phil was in pain, and Chester makes it sound like 2008 didn't happen because Phil was just being difficult. I was like, Man, when you turned around and looked, it threw me off.. But there was always a second kit near him, and. We crossed paths several times [after that] and there were never any weird vibes about it or anything. I was playing with adults. I am reminded of this Amazon review of "Dance Into the Light" (which, incidently, has the funniest Phil Collins album cover). I was never in a teenage band. Did you get to meet him? Im sure if you spent time with him one-on-one it would be different. They brought in Bill Bruford for that one tour [in 1976], but it was a fairly short tour. I know my reaction to Hacketts "Genesis revisited" was- Hmm, I guess hes running out of money As I wrote, I find Hacketts soloalbums uneven but on the other handhis music is solid (apart from that GTR-thing, didnt like it!) Later on he became tourmanager for Genesis. I think that Bruford said that in 1992-93 for the "Notes of the Edge" website. We picked what we wanted from them and made something new. I was never going to be a full partner, but theres no denying it was a band. But if youre a music-ed student, you need to learn a different instrument group every semester. My opinion is that Phil is a nice person with a good sense of humour.
